All brick looses its ability to shed water over time (usually after 8 – 10 years).  Once this happens, the brick starts to absorb water which leads to moss and algae growth.  In the winter months, the absorbed water freezes causing the bricks to split, crack, and chip.



This is called Spaulding.  If your chimney has white streaks, this is another sign your chimney  needs sealing.  This is called efflorescence and is caused when moisture is forcing a salt substance out of the brick.
